Program Format Considerations:

Often, our first instinct is to use what is familiar and comfortable. Perhaps a more appropriate question is:

“What program format will best serve my participants and program outcomes?”

Synchronous, Asynchronous or Hybrid?

What’s the difference between synchronous learning and asynchronous learning? The answer could have a big impact on your program participants and program impact. While program delivery options continue to grow, learning can still be grouped broadly into these two categories – synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous learning happens in real time. Asynchronous learning occurs without real-time interaction. Hybrid programs (also called blended or flipped) includes a combination of both asynchronous and synchronous learning.

Selecting the most appropriate format requires you consider your audience – their needs, lifestyle, work and family commitments. Often, an asynchronous program will be more convenient, making learning accessible to a wider audience. Synchronous program delivery can be more collaborative, spontaneous, and affective. Hybrid/blended/flipped program formats bring together the advantages of synchronous and asynchronous learning.   • Zoom for program delivery – These Zoom resources will help with using and integrating Zoom in your events and courses.
  • Digital accessibility resources for web pages and digital materials including Word, PDFs and PowerPoint handouts.
  • Participant demographics survey
    • Cvent – demographics are collected during registration
    • Canvas – a demographics survey is included in every course
    • If delivering your program through an outside organization or partner, Learning and Teaching Services can provide a Qualtrics demographic survey for your program area.
  • Media releasesMU Photo & Video Releases guidelines & form
    Zoom recordings made and shared for educational purposes do not require a release. If you take screen shots of interactions for any communication or marketing purposes, please be sure to have releases for the people involved.
  • Program evaluation
    • Virtual events through Cvent include a program evaluation.
    • An editable program evaluation survey is included in every Canvas course.
    • If delivering through an outside organization or partner, contact Teaching and Learning Services for access to the MU Extension Program Evaluation Qualtrics form.
